Facilities and Equipment
The newest instrumentation for the diagnosing and monitoring of glaucoma is available at Sedona Eye Care.
Glaucoma is called the "silent thief of sight" because there is no pain and it is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the U.S. Approximately 2 million Americans don't even know they have the disease and others will be diagnosed only when it is too late to save vision. There is no cure for glaucoma, but it can be controlled and vision can be preserved if detected early.
Diagnosing and monitoring glaucoma has always involved checking the pressure in the eyes with tonometry and visual field tests. The visual field tests are done in our office with the latest state-of-the-art Humphreys Visual Field Analyzer. These procedures detect elevated pressure with tonometry and measure vision already lost to glaucoma with visual field tests. To diagnose glaucoma earlier than ever before possible, we now have the GDx Access instrument which measures the retinal nerve fiber layer of the eye---the tissue recognized in the American Academy of Ophthalmology's definition of glaucoma. The result of the GDx exam is a color-coded "thickness map" of the retinal nerve fiber at the back of the eye. The testing takes usually less than five minutes, is completely painless with nothing even touching the eye and there is no pupil dilation necessary.
When glaucoma is suspected or diagnosed, Dr. Wright
has extensive experience in the treatment and management of glaucoma.
