SEDONA EYE CARE, P.C.

Our office provides total comprehensive eye care from eye glasses, refractions and well vision eye exams, contact lenses, medical eye care treatment of glaucoma and disease of the eye, and through our affiliated surgical ophthalmologist consultations and eye surgery. Many procedures are performed in our own ambulatory surgical eye center adjoining our office. subjective tests including refractions are provided by licensed and certified Doctors of Optometry not tecnicians. However, our highly trained technicians provide many of the objective tests with today's latest and best ophthalmic instruments. These instruments include GDX, the finest glaucoma diagnostic and monitoring instrument for nerve fiber layer measurement, Humphrey's Visual Field, Topcon Auto-Refractor and Reichert Air Tonometer.

Eye examinations at Sedona Eye Care are all inclusive. It begins with the screening instruments which include Humphrey's Frequency Technology Peripheral Vision Screening, Auto Kerato-Refractor Meter, which measure the fluid pressure insidethe eye with an "air puff" test, measuring the resistance of the eye to puff of air. In the examination room, after recording your chief concerns of your eyes and your vision, your visual acuity is taken in both distance and near vision with and / or without the aid of prescription glasses. Other screeners are performed concerning retinal perceptions and peripheral vision. We not only examine and test your eyes for the correct prescription glasses or contacts that will benefit your daily routine and lifestyle, but we also ensure that the ocular surface on your eye is healthy and diagnose and treat such conditions as dry eyes, allergies and infections of the surface of the eye and cornea. Finally, we maintain that an eye examination would be incomplete without close inspection and examination of the inner health of your eye, the retina, lens and optic nerve. This examination is best accomplished by enlargining the opening of your eye through dilation of the pupil. all testing, other than screening is done by licensed eye physicians. Our eyes are an integral part of our well being, at Sedona Eye Care, we strive to keep your eyes seeing well both externally and internally.

Diagnostic Services

PACHTOMETRY: The Pachtometer is used to measure the thickness of your cornea. One indication of glaucoma is an elevation in the pressure of the eye caused by the increase of intra ocular fluid. During a regular eye exam your intra ocular fluid pressure inside the eye is tested by either an "air puff" test which measures the reistance of the eye to a puff of air or use of a Goldmann Tonometer to measure the pressure. If the thickness of your cornea is thicker than that of the norm, it can result in pressures to be falsely elevated depending on the degree of thickness above the average. If the thickness of your cornea is thinner than that of the norm, it can result in pressures to be falsely lower depending on the degree of thinness below the average. After calculating the thickness of your cornea with pachtometer, we can then adjust the pressures accordingly to get more accurate reading of your pressures.

TONOMETRY: This standard test determines the fluid pressure inside the eye. Whether or not you get glaucoma depends on the level of pressure that your optic nerve can tolerate without being damaged. This level is different for each person. High pressures (22mm HG or above) puts you at greater risk for glaucoma. Tonometry determines the fluid pressure inside the eye. We measure eye pressure with two types of testing. First all patients are measured by the "air puff" test which measures the resistance of the eye to puff of air. Goldmann Tonometry; the gold standard test, using a purple light and actual touch to the cornea of the eye is done when circumstances deem it necessary.

VISUAL FIELDS: Loss of side vision can be a sign of glaucoma. Visual Field testing measures your side (peripheral) vision. All eye examination patients are first tested on our Humphrey Matrix Visual Field Instrument, a pre-screening instrument which quickly tests your peripheral vision in response to movement. If further testing is indicated from the doctor's examination or the pre-screening test, Humphrey's Central 30 Sita-Standard or Sita-Fast; the gold standard of Visual Field testing is administered to the patient. This tests your peripheral visions' sensitivity to light response. The Matrix may also be used which is more comprehensive testing of your peripheral visions' sensitivity to movement. Visual Fields can also detect peripheral visual loss from Macular Degeneration, stroke and other problems causing visual loss.

CANON DIGITAL RETINAL CAMERA: Our newly acquired Digital Retinal Camera with Steroscopic capabilities enables us to photograph your internal components of your eye including the retina, macula and optic nerve. We are able to photograph and record eye diseases detected inside the eye, such as optic nerve damage due to glaucoma, retinal damage due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and hemorrhages or branch vein occlusions due to high blood pressure. Each photography is displayed on the computer screen for further examination and also for comparison to later photographs. The steroscope allow the doctor to view the photograph in stereo giving an added dimensional effect to the photography.

ZEISS BIOMICROSCOPE CAMERA: The Zeiss Biomicroscope Camera has been integrated with our computer capturing system used with our Canon Retinal Camera. It is used to capture photos of the surface of the eye.

GDX LASER TECHNOLOGY NERVE FIBER LAYER ANALYZER: The state of the art gold standard in detecting damage to the nerve fiber layer in diagnosing glaucoma and any other diseases resulting from damage to the optic nerve head. The GDX is able to detect glaucoma based on nerve fiber layer damage of the optic nerve five years before any visual field loss is noticed. Once visual field loss is detected through testing, 30 to 40% of your nerve fiber layer has already been compromised. The GDX provides our doctors with a colored map and graph of the thickness of the nerve fiber layer.

What is an Optometrist?

Did you know that your doctor of optometry has as much education and training as your general practitioner or dentist? Most doctors of optometry complete eight years of college: four years of premedical undergraduate education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree and four years of graduate education, earning a Doctorate in Optometry. In addition, many optometrists complete a one-year residency or fellowship program following graduation. Annual continuing education is mandatory for alloptometrists to renew their license to practice.

Optometrists are independent primary health providers who examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures, as well as the diagnosis of related systemic conditions.
